Madison was fatally stabbed on September 8th, 2018 by her former partner, Bryan Cordero-Castro, in her aunt’s kitchen.

Despite being transported to the hospital, she passed away from her injuries. The police investigation found that Cordero-Castro had also murdered Madison’s aunt, Van Penthouse, earlier that year in Long Branch.

Cordero-Castro was arrested and charged with Madison’s murder, ultimately pleading guilty to first-degree aggravated manslaughter and third-degree attempted escape in November 2019.

He was sentenced to 35 years in prison under the “No Early Release Act,” which requires him to serve 85% of the sentence before being eligible for parole.

According to investigators, Madison had ended her relationship with Cordero-Castro but he persisted in trying to contact her, making over 230 calls to her before her death. On the day of her murder, Cordero-Castro went to Van Pelt’s home to see Madison but was initially unsuccessful.

After texting and calling her repeatedly, Madison agreed to meet him outside. Shortly after, she returned home and collapsed on the floor, and Cordero-Castro was arrested two hours later at his cousin’s residence. He also attempted to escape from the Long Branch Police Department after being booked.

The murder of Madison and her aunt shocked the Long Branch community and gained widespread media coverage. Following Madison’s death, her family and friends organized a candlelight vigil in her memory, drawing a large crowd of mourners.

The case also highlighted the issue of domestic violence, particularly among young people. According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1 in 5 women in the United States experience intimate partner violence in their lifetime, and young women between the ages of 18 and 24 are at the highest risk.

In response to this issue, several organizations and advocacy groups have been working to raise awareness and provide support for victims of domestic violence. These efforts include hotlines, counseling services, and community outreach programs.

The tragic events surrounding Madison’s murder and the subsequent legal proceedings have also prompted discussions about the criminal justice system and its handling of domestic violence cases.

Some advocates have criticized the “No Early Release Act,” arguing that it can result in excessively long prison sentences that do not address the underlying issues that contribute to domestic violence.

Overall, the case of Madison’s murder has had a profound impact on the Long Branch community and serves as a tragic reminder of the devastating effects of domestic violence.
